The Bible + Science, Evidence Presented

The Bible + Science in the Book of Genesis

Scientists admit Genesis is “close to the truth,” and they get a little nervous when they realize that their discoveries lead them back to the very beginning of Genesis. Notice the use of the word uncanny in the following quotes:

“Most cosmologists (scientists who study the structures and evolution of the universe) agree that the Genesis account of creation, in imaging and initial void, may be uncannily close to the truth” (Time, Dec. 1976).

“The universe suddenly exploded into being… The big bang bears an uncanny resemblance to the Genesis command”
(Jim Holt, Wall Street Journal).

The Book of Genesis Explains the Origin of the Sexes

Almost all forms of complex life are both male and female: humans, dogs, horses, moths, monkeys, fish, elephants, birds, etc. The male needs the female to reproduce, and the female needs the male to reproduce. One cannot carry on life without the other. The Bible tells us that “He who made them at the beginning made them male and female” (Matthew 19:4).

But if evolution is true, which came first according to evolutionary theory? If a male came into being before a female, how did the male of each species reproduce without females? How is it possible that a male and a female each spontaneously came into being, with very complex, complementary reproductive systems? If each sex was able to reproduce without the other, why—and how—would they have developed a reproductive system that requires both sexes for the species to survive?

The Book of Genesis + the Universe

Science expresses the universe in five terms: time, power, space, matter, and motion.Genesis 1:1-2 perfectly revealed these truths to the Hebrews: “In the beginning (time) God created (power) the heavens (space) and the earth (matter). And the Spirit of God moved (motion) upon the face of the waters.” The first thing God explains is that He controls all aspects of the universe.

Many of the great scientists of the past who founded and developed key disciplines of science were creationists. Yes, creationists.

The Bible + the Universal Flood of Noah

How do you account for billions of dead things that have been fossilized in a sedimentary rock layer, which covers the highest mountain peaks and lowest sea level areas in the world? “About 85% of the rock surface around the world is made up of sedimentary rock, indicating that at some time in the past, the world was covered by water” (Peter and Paul Lalonde, “301 Startling Proofs & Prophecies”).

The Bible in Genesis Differentiates People from Animals

The Bible tells us that animals are created “without understanding.” Humans are made in God’s image. We aren’t merely a higher form of species on the evolutionary scale. As human beings, we are aware of our “being.” God is “I AM,” and we know that “we are.” We have an advanced understanding that we exist.

Among other unique characteristics, we have an innate ability to appreciate God’s creation. What animal gazes with awe at a sunset or at the magnificence of the Grand Canyon? What animal obtains joy from the sounds of music or takes the time to form an orchestra to create and harmonize music? What animal among beasts sets up court systems and apportions justice to its fellow creatures? We are complex, intelligent beings accountable to a Creator God.

“For since the creation of the world, His invisible attribute are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse” (Romans 1:20).

While birds and other creatures have instincts to create, like nesting, we have the ability to uncover complex systems, such as the hidden laws of electricity. We can use the law of aerodynamics to transport ourselves around the globe. We unearth the hidden treasures of gold, silver, diamonds, and oil and expand their use for our benefit. Only humans have the unique capability to appreciate God for these incredible creations and to respond to His resources and love.

The Bible Speaks of One Common Ancestor

“Researchers suggest that virtually all modern men are closely related genetically and share genes with one male ancestor, dubbed ‘Y-chromosome Adam.’ We are finding out that humans have very shallow genetic roots that go back very recently to one ancestor… that indicates there was an origin in a specific location on the globe, and then it spread out from there” (U.S. News & World Report, Dec. 4, 1995).

POINT TO PONDER: XX = Female and XY = Male

The human genome cannot be altered. You are what you are at birth! Altering your body does not alter your sex. “And He said to them, ‘Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh?’ So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no man separate” (Matthew 19:4-6).

The Bible Reveals that the Earth is Round

The Scriptures tell us that the earth is round: “It is He that sits upon the circle of the earth” (Isaiah 40:22). The word “circle” translated is the Hebrew word chuwg, which is also translated circuit or compass depending on the context. That is, it indicates something spherical, rounded, or arched—not something that is flat or square. The Book of Isaiah was written sometime between 740 and 680 B.C. This was at least 300 years before Aristotle suggested in his book, On the Heavens, that the earth might be a sphere. It was another 2,000 years later (at a time when science believed that the earth was flat) that the Scriptures inspired Christopher Columbus to sail around the world.

The Bible + Earth’s Free-Float in Space

At a time when it was believed that the earth sat on a large animal or a giant (1500 B.C.), the Bible spoke of the earth’s free-float in space: “He… hangs the earth upon nothing” (Job 26:7). Science didn’t discover that the earth hangs upon nothing until 1650.

Only in recent years has science discovered that everything we see is composed of things that we cannot see—invisible atoms. The Bible corresponds with what is known as quantum physics. In Hebrews 11:3, written 2,000 years ago, Scripture tells us that the “things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”

The Bible + the Science of Oceanography

Matthew Maury (1806-1873) was considered the father of oceanography. He noticed the expression “paths of the sea” in Psalm 8:8, written 2,800 years ago:“If God said there are paths in the sea, I am going to find them.” Maury then took God at His word and went looking for those paths, and we are indebted to his discovery of the warm and cold continental currents. His book on oceanography remains a basic text on the subject and is used in universities.

The Bible + the First Law of Thermodynamics

The Scriptures say, “Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them” (Genesis 2:1). The original Hebrew uses the past definite tense for the verb “finished,” indicating an action completed in the past, never to occur again. The creation was finished—once and for all. That is exactly what the first law of thermodynamics says. This law, often referred to as the law of conservation of energy, states that neither matter nor energy can be either created or destroyed.

It was because of this law that Sir Fred Hoyle’s “steady state” or “continuous creation” theory was discarded. Hoyle stated that at points in the universe matter or energy was constantly being created. But, the first law states just the opposite. Indeed, there is no “creation” ongoing today. “It is finished”exactly as the Bible states.

The Bible + the Law of Entropy

Three different places in the Bible (Isaiah 51:6, Psalm 102:25, Hebrews 1:11) indicate that the earth is wearing out and this supports the second law of science, the principle of entropy. The laws of thermodynamics describe that all systems and elements of the universe tend to disintegrate to a lower order of available energy or organization. Everything is running down and wearing out as energy is becoming less and less available for use.

All things, whether a house or a sword, will disintegrate to dust or rust—a lower order of organization than the original house or sword. Throughout history, mankind has observed that everything—from the human body to a castle—begins to decay from the moment of maximum order at the beginning until, years later, the object stops functioning.

When you think about this universal principle, you can immediately see that the theory of evolution can’t be true. Evolution suggests that simple systems and elements become increasingly more organized and complicated by random chance. However, common sense and scientific observation have proven that all systems and elements over time tend to degenerate. In fact, the law of entropy proves that the theory of evolution is nonsense.

Consider the implications. The law of conservation of energy proves that the universe could not have created itself. It had to be created by a supernatural force outside the universe. “In the beginning, God created heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). The law of entropy, however, shows that the whole universe is running down as it decays to a lower order of available energy. This fact reveals that the universe must have been created at some point in the past and has been running down like a clock ever since that initial moment of creation. The current evolutionary theory that presumes the universe was created from nothing by itself is contradicted by all known laws of science.

In addition, the law of entropy reveals that the universe must have been created at some definite point to account for the scientific observation confirming continual decay. As an example, the sun burns up its nuclear fuel at the rate of 200,000 nuclear explosions every second, which provides the enormous radiation that floods our solar system. However, because it is burning up its store of fuel, logic says that there must have been a point in time in the distant past when the sun was created and began this process.

The Bible + Day/Night Time Astronomy

The Gospel writer Luke described the coming of Christ in the daytime:

“Even thus shall it be on the day when the Son of man is revealed” (Luke 17:30). Luke described the same event by declaring that Christ will come in the night: “I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left” (Luke 17:34). To the natural mind of his day, Luke’s words must have sounded like a contradiction. How could a single event, the coming of the Messiah, occur simultaneously in the day and in the night? Luke’s statement must have appeared impossible and contradictory from the early centuries. However, we now understand that on whatever day Christ returns, it could be a daytime event for those on one side of the globe while at night for those living on the other side of the planet—different time zones. How could Luke have known this scientific fact 2,000 years ago?

The Scriptures declare the sun moved “in his circuit unto the ends of it.” Recent discoveries by the Hubble telescope confirmed the accuracy of the Scriptures when they proved that the sun actually moves through space in a circuit covering an enormous orbit that lasts over 260 million years.

One of the most curious scientific revelations in the Bible regarding astronomy was pointed out by David Harris, an astronomer from Toronto. This statement is found in the Book of Amos, noting the seven stars in the constellation known as Pleiades. “Seek Him that maketh the seven stars and Orion” (Amos 5:8). The King James Version translators confirmed that Amos’s original Hebrew statement about the seven starsreferred to the constellation Pleiades. However, modern translators render this verse as “He made the Pleiades and Orion” (New King James Version).

Early translators were puzzled by this verse because there were only six stars that could be seen by the naked eye in the constellation Pleiades. Now, however, modern telescopes have revealed the existence of a seventh star in the Pleiades; it is so dim that only a telescope can detect it. How else did Amos know that there were seven stars in the constellation unless God told him? The Bible was correct all along in its description of seven stars as recorded by the prophet Amos over 25 centuries ago.

The Bible + the Law of Conservation of Energy

After exhaustive experiments, modern scientists have developed two fundamental laws of the science of thermodynamics that describe the nature of our known universe. The first is the law of conservation of energy, which reveals that energy can be neither created nor destroyed. This law was best explained by science writer Isaac Asimov: “Energy can be transferred from one place to another, or transformed from one form to another, but it can neither be created nor destroyed.”

In other words, this law states the whole amount of energy that exists throughout our universe remains constant and can never change. When scientists explode a nuclear device, for example, the uranium and plutonium within the warhead are not annihilated. The matter is simply transformed into a staggering release of heat and light energy. Every experiment has confirmed this law of conservation of energy as the most basic fundamental understanding of how the universe works. This law describes the present state of the universe after its initial creation by God.

Although this fundamental law of the universe was only discovered and proven scientifically during the last century, the Word of God recorded this principle thousands of years ago. Moses wrote in Genesis: “And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all His work that He created and made” (Genesis 2:2,3).

This inspired passage aligns with the law of conservation of energy: after God created man on the sixth day, “He rested from all His work that He had made.” His work was complete.

In addition, the Scriptures reveal why nothing can now be totally destroyed because Jesus Christ, who created all things, is “upholding all things by the word of His power” (Hebrews 1:3). In another passage, the writer of the Book of Hebrews declared that Jesus, the Creator of the universe, had finished His acts of creation: “For whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from His” (Hebrews 4:10).

The Bible + the Law of Probabilities

“The chance that higher life forms might have emerged in this way [through evolution] is comparable to the chance that a tornado sweeping through a junkyard might assemble a Boeing 747 from its materials.”

“The likelihood of the formation of life from inanimate matter is one out of 10 x 10 to 40,000—it is big enough to bury Darwin and the whole theory of evolution. And if the beginnings of life were not random, they must have been the product of purposeful intelligence” (Sir Fred Hoyle, professor of astronomy, Cambridge University).

The Bible + the Laws of Hygiene

In 1845, a young doctor in Vienna named Ignaz Semmelweis was horrified at the terrible death rate of women who gave birth in hospitals. As many as 30% died after childbirth. Semmelweis noted that doctors would examine the bodies of patients who died without washing their hands, go straight to the next ward, and then examine expectant mothers. This was their normal practice because the presence of microscopic diseases was unknown. Semmelweis insisted that doctors wash their hands before each exam, and the death rate immediately dropped to 2%.

Look at the specific instructions God gave thousands of years ago to His people for when they encountered disease: “And when he that has an issue is cleansed of his issue; then he shall number to himself seven days for his cleansing, and wash his clothes, bathe his flesh in running water, and shall be clean” (Leviticus 15:13). Until recent years, doctors washed their hands in a bowl of water, leaving invisible germs on their hands. However, the Bible says specifically to wash under running water.

The Bible + the Correlation of Mind and Body

Medical science has come to understand that there is a strong relationship between a person’s mental and physical health. The Bible revealed this to us with these and other statements written around 950 B.C.:

“A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy is the rottenness of the bones” (Proverbs 14:30).

“The light of the eyes rejoices the heart: and a good report makes the bones fat and healthy” (Proverbs 15:30).

“Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones” (Proverbs 16:24).

“A merry heart does good like a medicine: but a broken spirit dries the bones” (Proverbs 17:22).

The Bible + Bacteria

“And… neither shall you eat any flesh that is torn from beasts in the field; you shall cast it to the dogs” (Exodus 22:31). Thousands of years before modern science identified bacteria, God made provision for Israel by banning the eating of meat that could be spoiled by bacteria.

The Bible + Meteorological Laws

The Scriptures describe a “cycle of air currents” 2,000 years before scientists discovered them: “The wind blows to the south, and goes around to the north; it whirls about continually, and the wind returns again according to his circuits” (Ecclesiastes 1:6). We now know that air around the earth turns in huge circles, clockwise in one hemisphere and counterclockwise in the other.

The Bible + the Water Cycle

The Scriptures inform us, “All streams run into the sea, but the sea is not full;

to the place where the streams flow, there they return again” (Ecclesiastes 1:7). This statement alone may not seem profound. But when considered with other biblical passages, it becomes all the more remarkable.

For example, the Mississippi River dumps approximately 518 billion gallons of water every 24 hours into the Gulf of Mexico. Where does all that water go? And that’s just one of thousands of rivers. The answer lies in the hydrologic cycle, so well described in the Bible. Ecclesiastes 11:3 states that “if the clouds are full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth.”

Look at the Bible’s concise words in Amos 9:6: “Who calls for the waters of the sea, and pours them out on the face of the earth—The Lord is His name.” The idea of a complete water cycle was not fully understood by science until the 17th century. However, more than 2,000 years before the discoveries of Pierre Perrault, Edmund Mariotte, Edmund Halley, and others, the Scriptures clearly spoke of a water cycle.

The Bible Speaks of a Specific Design

“Slight variations in physical laws such as gravity or electromagnetism would make life impossible. The necessity to produce life lies at the center of the universe’s whole machinery and design” (John Wheeler, professor of physics, Princeton University).

Even evolutionist Stephen Hawking,considered the best-known scientist since Albert Einstein, acknowledges that “the universe and the laws of physics seem to have been specially designed for us. If any one of about 40 physical qualities had more than slightly different values, life as we know it could not exist; either atoms would not be stable, or they wouldn’t combine into molecules, or the stars wouldn’t form the heavier elements, or the universe would collapse before life could develop.”

The Bible + Ship Dimensions

In Genesis 6, God gave Noah the dimensions of the 1.5 million-cubic-foot ark he was to build. In 1609, at Hoorn in Holland, a ship was built after that same pattern, revolutionizing shipbuilding. By 1900, every large ship on the high seas was inclined toward the proportions of the ark, verified by “Lloyd’s Register of Shipping” in the World Almanac.

The Bible + the Incredible Book of Job

TheBook of Job, among the oldest recorded books of the Bible (1520 B.C.), is filled with scientific facts that outline contemporary thought. This book addresses concepts of earth science and physics before modern discoveries were even documented.

“The study of the Book of Job and its comparison with the latest scientific discoveries has brought me to the matured conviction that the Bible is an inspired book and was written by the One who made the stars.”

Job + the Springs of the Sea

“Modern deep-sea diving cameras have discovered amazing hot-water vents on the floor of the oceans, the springs of the sea, which are mentioned in Job 38:16. These thermal vents release huge amounts of mineral-rich, superheated water—springs in the darkness.” –Richard Gunther

The Book of Job + Light

“Sir Isaac Newton studied light and discovered that white light is made of seven colors, which can be separated from the white (see Job 38:24), and then recombined to make white again. Science discovered this in 1650.”

The Book of Job + the Speed of Light

The Book of Job 38:19 asks, “Where is the way where light dwells?” Modern man has only recently discovered that light (electromagnetic radiation) has a “way”—or light speed—in empty space. This speed is approximately 186,000 miles per second.

The Book of Job + the Dinosaurs

Why did dinosaurs disappear? Science can only speculate. However, the answer may be in Job 40:15-24. In this passage, God Himself speaks of a great creature called “behemoth.”Some Bible commentators think this is a reference to the hippopotamus. However, one of the characteristics of this massive animal is that it had a tail the size of a large tree. The hippo’s tail isn’t like a tree; it is more like a small twig.

Other given characteristics of this huge animal were: it was the largest of all the creatures God made, it was plant-eating (herbivorous), and it had its strength in its hips. It had very strong bones, lived among the trees, drank massive amounts of water, and was not disturbed by a raging river.It appeared impervious to attack because its nose could pierce through snares. But Scripture says, “He that made him can make his sword to approach unto him” (Job 40:19). In other words, God caused this, the largest of all the creatures He had made, to become extinct.

The Book of Job + Air Mass

“Scripture tells us in Job 28:25 that there is ‘a weight for the wind.’ Long before it was recognized that the air had weight (16th century), the Bible said that it did. It also tells us that water has weight. The fact that so much water covers the earth means that the effects of the sun and moon’s gravity are balanced perfectly. The energy is dissipated in the water—the weight of the water is precisely measured.” –Richard Gunther

The Book of Job + the Earth’s Rotation

For ages, scientists believed in a geocentric view of the universe. The differences between night and day were believed to be caused by the sun revolving around the earth. Today, we know that the earth’s rotation on its axis is responsible for the sun’s rising and setting. But 4,000 years ago, it was written, “Have you commanded the morning since your days, and caused the day spring [dawn] to know his place? It [the earth] is turned as clay to the seal” (Job 38:12,14). The picture here is of a clay vessel being turned or rotated upon the potter’s wheel—an accurate analogy of the earth’s rotation.

The Challenge:

One time on a college campus where the Word of God was being shared regarding scientific proofs, an ignorant professor declared, “I don’t care if you pulled Noah’s Ark through the center of this campus, I still would not believe it!” Do not be like that professor.

Some people need proof, signs, and wonders to see the truth. Others need only to recognize the truths presented when we seek God through His mighty Word—the Bible—and His creation. The human free will must weigh all things as eternal destiny hangs in the balance. Does it take faith? Yes, but we have the evidence to substantiate our faith as our decision is not a blind one.
